It’s all about progressive independence! If we want our kids to gain the skills they need, we have to give them the space to grow. ๐ฑ Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ They WATCH you do it: Kids first learn by observing us. 2️⃣ They HELP you do it: Next, they get involved and assist us in the task. 3️⃣ You HELP THEM do it: Then, we guide them as they take the lead. 4️⃣ They do it on their own: Finally, they’re ready to handle it solo! @jlythcotthaims talks about this progression on the How to Talk to Kids about Anything podcast as well as in her fabulous book, How to Raise an Adult, where she speaks of learning this 4-step progression from her friend who uses this technique with her daughter. It’s simple and easy to remember, don’t you think!? Remember, stepping back allows them to step up. Encouraging independence is one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids. ๐ง Want more tips on raising confident, capable kids? Tune in to my latest podcast for more strategies!
