Mistakes: Make them, Learn from them, Grow from them #shorts

When we avoid getting out of our comfort zone and taking positive risks, we never pave the way to success.  The only way that we can become successful is by making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, and growing from those mistakes.  We can’t have our kids avoid making mistakes because they never strengthen the connections in their brains that help them learn and grow– and they don’t gain the confidence they need to bounce back and move forward.  There’s a saying that reminds us that if we stay in one place we’re going backwards.  All those bumps and folds in our journey are not just the ups and downs of life but the mistakes, and growth from those mistakes. This is what builds strength and helps us all move towards our own personal success in life.  Follow for more insight on how to be the best parent for your child!

Identity is everything! This is doubly true for children #shorts

Identity is everything. Like James Clear says in his book ‘Atomic Habits’ “Your Identity can hold you back… or build you up” This is doubly true for children. If your child uses a lot of these types of phrases when they’re talking to themselves, it can be extremely damaging to their self-identity. Here are some phrases you can teach your child to say to themselves instead: I’m so stupid ➡️ I need some extra help with this task I’m awful at math ➡️ I’m a good reader I am scared of everything ➡️ I’m brave when it counts I’m not coordinated ➡️ I am someone who likes new things I’m not a good artist like you ➡️ I’m a strong performer on-stage To learn more about these ideas with examples and advice on what to say, read my book "How to Talk to Kids About Anything!" 📕

5️⃣ Key actions for raising mentally strong children #shorts

5️⃣ Key actions for raising mentally strong children: 1️⃣ Allow your kids to problem-solve for themselves:  Make sure they know, “I have faith in you that you’ll come up with the best solution for you.” When we make all of our children’s decisions for them, they become reliant on us instead of their own internal compass and inner confidence. Of course we are here to help and be a soundboard. 2️⃣ Validate their full range of feelings: Let your kids know; “It’s okay to feel how you feel.” Mentally strong kids feel happy, sad, scared, angry and plethora of other feelings. They also learn that feelings come and go and that it’s okay to feel– so that they don’t become derailed by them when unpleasant feelings come along. 3️⃣ Let your kids make mistakes. Tell your kids; “Mistakes are learning opportunities- they are not the end of the road but simply a stop along the way on the path to success.” When we swoop in at a moment’s notice whenever our children are about to mess up, they learn that mistakes are bad and they should step aside and let you take over if there is any risk of failure. 4️⃣ Help them to create balance in their lives Ask your kids, “What would you like to do for fun this weekend?” “What helps you relax?” “Who makes you laugh?” We live in a culture that is often all about achieving– being the best, even if it means getting no rest. But this doesn’t make us strong– in fact, it can zap our children of their energy and divorce them from what makes them feel fulfilled, loved, energized and calm.  5️⃣ They take positive risks Say to your kids; “I love watching you try new things- you are brave and fully capable of mastering these skills, in time!” Kids are often scared to try new things because their comfort zones are, well, comfortable. But mentally strong kids stretch their comfort zones so that they can grow. If you choose to do these things, you are actively taking steps to raise a more mentally resilient and strong child. You’re also equipping them with the things they need to become effective adults and be good human beings. How to Talk to Kids about Thriving in an Uncertain World with Michele Borba, Ed.D

Are you finding that kids these days are “running on empty?” While there is no lack of high-achieving kids that are arguably more accomplished, better educated, and more privileged than ever before, they also seem to be more stressed, unhappier, and struggling. We have heard in numerous podcast episodes with top experts that kids are suffering from anxiety, depression, and burnout at younger and younger ages. My next guest says that thrivers are different though: they flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Why? It turns out that they’ve aced the traits that set them on a happy, healthy, high performing path--confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism. These traits will allow kids to roll with the punches and succeed in life. How? For that we will turn to my friend and colleague, Dr. Michele Borba.
