Avoid this 3 Conversation Stoppers #shorts
Want your kids to come to you when they’ve made a mistake? Here’s where to start. In Chapter 7 of How to Talk to Kids About Anything, I talk about the common conversation stoppers that can shut kids down—and what to say instead to keep the door open. Stopper 1: Dismissing their feelings Instead of: “You don’t really feel that way.” Try: “I can feel how angry you are. That felt like a betrayal.” Stopper 2: Punishing honesty Instead of: “I can’t believe you did that. No phone for a week.” Try: “Thank you for coming to me. That took courage. Let’s talk it through together.” Stopper 3: Unsolicited advice Instead of: “If it were me, I’d…” Try: “What would be most helpful right now, advice, a hug, or just someone to listen?” We don’t need to fix everything; we just need to be safe enough for our kids to come to us, even when it’s hard. I go deeper into this in Chapter 7 of my book, How to Talk to Kids About Anything. Which conversation stopper resonated most with you? I’ve done them all. Let’s grow together. #HowToTalkToKids #ParentingAdvice #EmotionalSafety #DrRobynSilverman #ConnectedParenting #ParentingSupport

Listening actively and showing empathy to Your Kids #shorts
How often do we find ourselves talking “at” our kids instead of truly listening? In big conversations, it’s tempting to offer advice or tell them what to do, but what if we turned the tables? What if we focused on listening rather than lecturing? Here’s how to create space for your child to open up: 1. Ask Powerful Questions: Instead of giving them all the answers, ask questions that help them reflect. Simple, direct questions like “How do you feel about that?” or “What do you think should happen next?” let them take ownership of the conversation and their feelings. 2. Put Down Your Phone and Give Full Attention: Distractions are everywhere, but when you’re engaged in a deep conversation with your child, nothing says “I care” like being fully present. Put your phone away, make eye contact, and give them your full attention. It shows them that their thoughts and feelings matter. 3. Move from Lecturer to Listener: We all want to teach our kids important life lessons, but sometimes the most valuable lesson we can give them is the space to talk. Move from being the lecturer to the listener, and you’ll be amazed at how much they open up and share. These small shifts can transform your relationship with your child. Listening actively and showing empathy fosters trust and helps them feel heard. The result? Conversations that are deeper, more meaningful, and more impactful. Want more tips like this? How to talk to kids about What a Friend Really Is. #shorts
Is your child struggling with a “friend” who doesn’t feel like one? When kids come home hurt or confused by a friendship, it’s more than just playground drama; it’s a chance to reflect, not just react. In my presentation on friendship, I ask kids to define what a great friend is in three words. Then I ask… do your friends reflect that definition? That moment hits hard, and it opens the door to self-awareness. Let’s help our kids tune into their gut: Do they feel seen or invisible? Safe or small? Stronger or unsure? This isn’t about judgment, it’s about self-trust. We want them to build relationships that make them feel whole, now and as adults. Drop a heart if this hits home and tag a parent who's helping their child navigate friendship heartbreak. Follow for more on raising strong, self-aware kids. #ParentingTips #ChildDevelopment #EmotionalIntelligence #RaisingKids #FriendshipGoals #ParentingSupport #RaisingTweens #RaisingTeens #SocialEmotionalLearning #KidsMentalHealth #PositiveParenting #DrRobynSilverman #PowerfulParenting #ParentingThroughEmotions

This is Time Well Spent #shorts
It’s not just a board game... it’s presence. When we gather around the table, we’re doing so much more than moving pieces and rolling dice. We’re creating space to slow down, to connect, to say, “You matter.” In our home, board games become the backdrop for laughter, learning, and love. It’s where patience is practiced, stories are shared, and togetherness is felt. In a world that pulls us in a hundred directions, this is our way of coming back to each other. Levels of Listening #shorts
Great leaders and great parents have one thing in common... they listen. Listening isn’t just about hearing words; it’s about making someone feel seen, valued, and understood. Think about the best conversation you’ve ever had, it wasn’t when someone talked at you, but when you truly felt heard. The same applies to our kids. When we listen with intention, we build trust, deepen connection, and show them that their thoughts and feelings matter. Want to strengthen your leadership and parenting skills? Why Does My Child Speak So Sharply to Me #shorts
OUCH!! “Why Does My Child Speak So Sharply to Me?” If your child or teen has been sharp with you, it may not be about you at all. Here are a few reasons this might be happening: -They’re craving one-on-one time with you. -They’re testing boundaries (it’s part of growing up!). -They’re feeling big emotions like anger or frustration. -They’re imitating behavior they’ve seen elsewhere. -They’re exploring independence as part of their development. -Or yes, it may be how you’ve been arguing with each other- matching each other’s sharpness- and the pattern needs to be broken. Instead of reacting sharply back, let’s teach them to navigate disagreements and big feelings with kindness. Connection is key! What’s worked for you when handling these situations? Upset Kids? Lets break this down #shorts
Upset kid? Let’s break this down. Words matter, especially when our kids are struggling. Instead of dismissing their feelings, let's create a safe space for them to express and process emotions. Here’s why these common phrases can do more harm than good: ❌ “It’s not a big deal.” → Minimizing their emotions makes them feel unheard and less likely to open up in the future. ❌ “It’s all in your head.” → Dismissing their feelings can make them feel unseen and invalidated. ❌ “You don’t really feel that way.” → This contradicts their experience, leading to confusion and disconnection. ❌ “Just look at the bright side!” → Toxic positivity doesn’t teach resilience—it teaches kids to suppress emotions. ❌ “Big kids/boys don’t cry.” → Shaming emotions cuts kids off from healthy coping strategies and seeking support. Instead, let’s listen with empathy, validate their emotions, and guide them toward emotional regulation. When kids feel heard, they learn to express themselves in healthy ways. 💛 Do you hear these types of statements from a parent or key adult in your home? Pause, Look and Be Present Parenting Tips #shorts
Life moves fast. Deadlines pile up, emails flood in, and the to-do list never seems to end. But in the middle of all the busyness, our kids are here, watching, waiting, hoping we’ll take a moment to see them, hear them, and just be with them. One day, they’ll be grown. They won’t need our help tying their shoes, checking their homework, or tucking them in at night. But today? Today, they do. Take the time. Pause. Turn to them. Be present. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just intentional. Because the moments we spend with them now will be the ones they carry with them forever. My Teen is in a bad mood #shorts
Why does my nervous system react the same way to my teen’s bad mood as it would to a saber-tooth tiger chasing me?! If you’ve ever felt this, you’re not alone! Our amygdala doesn’t always distinguish between actual danger and the emotional rollercoaster of parenting a teen. And let’s be real, when they’re storming through the house like a hurricane, our stress levels definitely take a hit! I love this trend because I literally talk about this in Chapter 1 of 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘒𝘪𝘥𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘈𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨! Our kids’ emotions impact us in powerful ways, and learning how to regulate ourselves is just as important as guiding them through their big feelings. The Biggest Barrier to Our Childs Success Might Be Us #shorts
It’s tough to admit, but sometimes, as parents, we unintentionally hold our kids back from learning and growing. When we rescue them too often, turn a blind eye to struggles, or push them forward before they’re ready, we might be preventing critical brain development and real learning from happening. Helping isn’t about doing it for them, it’s about creating systems that allow them to try, fail, and learn in a supportive environment. Failure isn’t the enemy; it’s a stepping stone to growth. Let’s remind ourselves: It’s okay to let them struggle. It’s okay to give them time to figure it out. It’s okay to let the learning happen at their own pace. The Power of Asking Kids About Their Strengths #shorts
When was the last time you asked a child, What’s important to you? or What strengths do you see in yourself? For many kids, the answer might be “never.” I’ll never forget the story of a parent who came to one of my talks after their child shared that, for the first time, someone asked about their strengths, and it changed everything. When we recognize a child’s efforts and responsibilities, even the ones they find annoying or difficult, we help them see their hidden strengths. For example: Taking care of a sibling every morning develops patience and caregiving skills. Facing challenges at home or school can shape resilience and problem-solving abilities. These small moments of acknowledgment can transform how kids see themselves, helping them feel valued, capable, and confident. Let’s make it a point to ask our kids, “What’s important to you? What are your strengths?” #EmpoweringKids #PositiveParenting #RaisingConfidentKids #HowToTalkToKids #DrRobynSilverman #ParentingTips #MindfulParenting #ParentingPodcast

Kids dont always need our words Leadership Conversation Skills Part 3 #shorts
Some of the most powerful lessons in parenting and leadership aren’t loud—they’re quiet. It’s not about rushing to fix, explain, or lecture. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is simply show up with calm, steady presence. This is what we call “holding space” in parenting. A safe place to land in teaching. A moment of trust before a moment of instruction. Kids don’t always need our words. Sometimes, they just need to know we’re there—grounded, calm, and consistent. Today, maybe your greatest leadership move isn’t what you say. How do Children learn the Skills they Need #shorts
It’s all about progressive independence! If we want our kids to gain the skills they need, we have to give them the space to grow. 🌱 Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ They WATCH you do it: Kids first learn by observing us. 2️⃣ They HELP you do it: Next, they get involved and assist us in the task. 3️⃣ You HELP THEM do it: Then, we guide them as they take the lead. 4️⃣ They do it on their own: Finally, they’re ready to handle it solo! @jlythcotthaims talks about this progression on the How to Talk to Kids about Anything podcast as well as in her fabulous book, How to Raise an Adult, where she speaks of learning this 4-step progression from her friend who uses this technique with her daughter. It’s simple and easy to remember, don’t you think!? Remember, stepping back allows them to step up. Facing Fears Why Doing the Thing Matters #shorts
Facing Fears: Why “Doing the Thing” Matters When we avoid challenges, we also avoid growth. 🙅♀️ That’s why I sent my daughter to camp—even though she has anxiety. Because here’s the truth: The only way to know you can do something is to actually do it. It’s not about pushing kids into overwhelming situations; it’s about giving them the support and tools they need to step out of their comfort zone. 🌟 When we create safe spaces for them to try, struggle, and succeed, we teach them: ✨ Anxiety doesn’t have to stop you. ✨ Growth comes from testing your skills, not avoiding them. ✨ You’re capable of doing hard things, even when they feel scary. If we shield our kids from every challenge, we reinforce their fears. Let’s help them face the world with courage, knowing that they’re not alone—and that they can do the thing. 💪 #FacingFears #RaisingResilientKids #HowToTalkToKids #PositiveParenting #anxietyrelief #MindfulParenting #drrobynsilverman

Tell These Stories to Your Kids Leadership Conversation Skills Part 2 #shorts
Great leaders don’t just give directions—they tell stories. Stories connect us. They remind kids that failure isn't the end… it’s part of the path. 💥 Oprah was told she was “unfit for TV.” Dr. Seuss? Rejected 27 times. Walt Disney? Fired for “lack of imagination.” And yet, look what they built. 🙌 If we don’t share our real stories, kids assume success is effortless—and that can be damaging. So here's your challenge: SHARE a time you failed but kept going. With your kids, your students, or right here in the comments. Because when we talk about our imperfect journeys, we give others permission to keep walking theirs. Follow @DrRobynSilverman for more scripts and tips to make the hard conversations easier—and keep an eye out for Leadership Conversation Skill #3, coming soon! #LeadershipForKids #StorytellingMatters #DrRobynSilverman #PowerfulWords #CharacterDevelopment #ParentingTips #GritAndGrace #KidsNeedToHearThis #RaisingLeaders #ScriptsThatWork

Avoid these 3 Conversation Stopper that can Shut Your Kids Down #shorts
Let’s talk it through together.” Stopper 3: Unsolicited advice Instead of: “If it were me, I’d…” Try: “What would be most helpful right now—advice, a hug, or just someone to listen?” We don’t need to fix everything—we just need to be safe enough for our kids to come to us, even when it’s hard. I go deeper into this in Chapter 7 of my book, How to Talk to Kids About Anything. Which conversation stopper resonated most with you? I’ve done them all. Let’s grow together. #HowToTalkToKids #ParentingAdvice #EmotionalSafety #DrRobynSilverman #ConnectedParenting #ParentingSupport
